Start your day around 8:00 am in the morning from Zurich train station and board the train to St Gallen. Walk for about 10 minutes to get to Abbey of St Gall, the home of St Gallen cathedral and library. The cathedral is from 8th century A.D. and is truly a crown jewel of St Gallen. Plan to spend about an hour inside the cathedral followed by about 30 minutes inside the library. From the library, head over to St Gallen station to board a train back to Zurich.
After you grab some lunch, it is now time to explore the four major churches in Zurich. Start off with Grossmunster, a Romanesque style Protestant church in the banks of Limmat river. Spend about 45 minutes at the church. Walk for 5 minutes from here to reach Fraumunster. Pay special attention to the Chagall and Giacometti stained glass windows in the church. Spend about 30 to 45 minutes here.
Walk for about 4 minutes to reach St. Peter’s church, a Romanesque and Gothic style church located right in the downtown. This happens to be the oldest parish church in Zurich. You can still see the foundation walls beneath the chancel. From St. Peter’s church, walk for about 7 minutes to reach Predigerkirche church, a Romanesque style Dominican church in downtown. As you wrap up your visit of churches for the day, spend the evening walking along Lake Zurich for some great scenery.
If you are following the 7-day itinerary of things to do in Switzerland, head over to Zurich train station and board the train between 7 pm and 8 pm to Lucerne. The ride lasts 50 minutes in a high speed train. After you reach Lucerne, head over to your hotel and rest well to get ready for a very early start on day 3.
